Snail-paced broadband and...

...a spell of Jury Service.

Just a brief catch-up to prove I haven't dropped off the face of the earth.

Road works, gas main replacement and general weather conditions seem to have been impacting on the broadband services in my area for a while. I don't think having half the street dug-up during the snow helped very much as a lot of the cable piping was exposed to the elements for a few weeks.

Trying to read my emails each day has become a struggle because the limited time I have available doesn't fit well with the lengthy periods it takes to load Outlook.

On top of this, Windows 10 keeps freezing me out telling me that urgent updates are required yet when I try to install them I'm told that everything is up to date ??? ***grrrrrrrr*** more hassle. As a result, I haven't loaded any new photos for a while so I do apologise for the lack of pics.

Things were ticking along generally and I was looking forward to another weekend away with crafting friends like the one I went on last year. Panic set in when I received a summons to do Jury Service.

Although the two weeks specified should not have caused any problems, I had visions of ending up on a long case that would drag on & on &...

Luckily it didn't - I was only selected for one case which was over & done with in 3 days.

I can't say I enjoyed my time, so much sitting around waiting to hear whether you are needed. However, I was very productive - I have done a lot of crochet and managed to make a good selection for flowers and small projects ready for our "Learning at Work Week" event. I have also nearly completed a crochet blanket (700grams worth of DK yarn) which actually came in handy and helped to keep me warm as the court building is very cold - unfortunately I couldn't take the blanket into the court room even though it was like an ice-box...just had to make do with coats, scarves and lots of layered clothing. Apparently they don't like the court to be too warm as the legal folk have to wear gowns & wigs.

So I'm back at work, catching up on hundreds of emails and trying to sort out a few issues that arose whilst I was off. At least I now know that there won't be any problems concerning the crafting weekend - time can't pass quickly enough for me.......................................................................

The world is full of...

...morons.

moron
ˈmɔːrɒn/
noun
informal
  1. a stupid person.

"we can't let these thoughtless morons get away with mindless vandalism every weekend"

Early 20th Century references to the word "moron" highlighted - adults with the behaviour of between 8 & 12 year-olds.

Every day I see so many people that fall into this description that I truly wonder how the human race has managed to survive this long.

Mobile Phones
The original meaning of a 'mobile' phone was one that you could pick up and take with you so that you could have phone access wherever you were. Not as it has come to mean - that piece of equipment, permanently glued to your hand and/or ear that is in constant use irrespective of where you are or what you are doing.

I commute to work via public transport and the amount of morons wandering through the stations at these very busy times is unbelievable. There is a young woman that I see most mornings and if she isn't chatting on her phone she is texting or gaming. She regularly trips because she isn't looking where she is going and the other morning she had a very nasty fall at the top of the escalator - 9 hours later she is going through the same station on her way home; eyes glued to her mobile and her thumbs rapidly texting away. Some folk just never learn.

However, what is worse is the 'parent' who has a small tot running around amongst rush-hour crowds but they are more interested in what is happening on their phone. So many possible horrors here a lost child, a snatched child, a child under a train.

We live in an age where the threat of identity theft is something that we all have to be on our guard against so why do some folk have extremely detailed, LOUD, conversations with their banks/building societies whilst sat on a busy train...complete stupidity.

Cyclists
Whilst I will agree that many drivers do not drive with due consideration for other road users, there are many cyclists that do not help themselves to stay safe.

There are a lot of cyclists in London and there are many cycle routes for them to help improve their safety but every day I see them ignoring traffic lights, cutting across traffic lanes and mounting pavements without any consideration for pedestrians...and the numbers that are dressed in black/dark clothing without any reflective areas or worse still are riding in the dark without any lights just beggars belief.

At home, I have to walk past a parade of shops to get to/from the station and the times that cycles are just dumped outside shop doors with no thought to how they could trip someone coming out of the store or the fact that they are blocking the footpath shows they have no thought for anyone else.

I do not understand the mentality of parents who allow their kids to go out on their bikes just as darkness is falling with no lights of any kind on the bikes...

There also seems to be some kind of assumption (whether adult or child) that if you ride on the pavement you don't need lights??? Stupidity or what!!!

I could go on but this really would turn into 'War & Peace' so I had better call a halt to my rant now (I'm sure I can save my gripes about drivers and inconsiderate parkers until another day). I'll step down from my soap box for the time being.....................................

I can fully understand...

...why the UK appeared so far down the Broadband speed list.

This morning I spent a frustrating hour trying to get to my emails and then check my ready list on my blog - the second task was not accomplished as I gave up waiting for the 'blue ring of death' to stop spinning.

I appreciate that with the various "works" going on down our street at the moment this could be impacting on services...we seem to have holes and road works wherever you look.

But talk about rubbing salt into an already angry wound, when I did get into my emails this morning there was one from my service provider advising me that my monthly costs will increase by £3.99 from 1 November 2017. They then tried to soften the blow by reminding me of all the 'wonderful' things I have access to.

Needless to say, I was not in the best of moods when I finally managed to set off for work..........................................................................................

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

...and double Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Windows 10 carried out some up-dates on Sunday & Monday and whatever was done means that Windows is no longer friends with Blogger.

Yesterday, I spent ages trying to get into Blogger only to be faced with a blank white screen.

Today, I have spent ages trying to get into Blogger and although I have finally succeeded, things are not running smoothly.

Windows 10 & Blogger - will you please 'kiss & make-up' so that I can get on with the things that I need to do...........................................................

What has disappeared from...

...your High Street?

The beginning of October saw the last of our banks withdraw from the High Street in our town and last night saw a lot of frustrated folk getting off the train and finding that only one of the remaining ATMs in the town was actually working. Something that is becoming all too familiar...
...as more & more banks jump on the "let's push digital" band-wagon.

I may be a 'stick in the mud' but I don't want to do everything on-line and I don't want to deal with row upon row of machines - I want to deal with a person.

When we moved to this area, many moons ago, our high street was a wonderful mix. We had a good selection of banking facilities...Barclays, Midland, Lloyds, Nationwide, TSB and of course the Post Office. Now all we have is the Post Office which is little more than a raised desk in the local newsagent's where there is normally only one member of staff flitting between serving papers and dealing with post & banking.

There were a couple of supermarkets, chemists, pet-shops, grocers, butchers, general stores, hardware stores, utilities, hairdressers, shoe-shops........all the things you would expect in a small country town centre. Now all we seem to have is Estate Agents and Take-aways - not fabulous for an area with a high pensioner population.

A mile down the road we have another town centre and things are just as bad there as many of the banking facilities have disappeared over the years (or combined). It was great when Barclays combined with The Woolwich as in Corringham they adopted the Woolwich opening hours - Saturday morning opening - great for those of us that don't always have time during the week.......last weekend that came to an end and staff were telling folk not to worry "they could use the post office"????

The Media keep telling us that society is becoming very isolated and kids can't communicate well - what do they expect when there is becoming less opportunity for human, face-to-face interaction.

We live in a world of constant change and we have wonderful technology available to us but we really shouldn't be losing out on human contact.

I work in an area where there is a very high level of shoplifting in the shopping mall - virtually every store has a security guard and there are more wandering around the mall. Yet the likes of Lidl, Poundland, Sainsburys and Wilko have replaced loads of the checkouts with self service tills - are they mad? If they were freeing up staff to wander around being 'visible' there might be some sense to it but they haven't - you can never find an assistant when you need one so they have actually used this move to reduce staff.

I work with PCs every day and I am currently typing this on my home PC - fabulous - but I like to meet & talk to people; real people. So I will continue to support my local stores (the ones that remain) and hope that the High Street doesn't disappear completely.............................................

Blogger is...

...winding me up at the moment.

It doesn't seem to matter whether I post direct or schedule but the postings are appearing at strange times or not appearing in reading lists until almost a day later.

This is frustrating the life out of me because I don't know if I've done something to upset the settings of whether it is just Blogger playing silly wotsits again.

How I hate...

...con-merchants that take advantage of the elderly.

During the recent gales a passing (???) builder knocked to point out to Mum that her chimney stack was wobbling all over the place. It was moving dangerously so she agreed to have him fix it.

£900 later (apparently should have been £1300 but he gives a discount to pensioners - yeh right).

Despite knowing that it would need to go through the insurance he asked for payment and now Mum has been told that the insurance policy probably won't pay out as the bill has been paid.

But it gets worse...

Mum hasn't been very well (Winter bug) and hasn't been able to get out much so she obviously found this 'pleasant' chap a ready ear for her to chat to. She was telling him about the problem with drainage on her driveway and how the door at the back of her extension wouldn't open.

Next thing we know, he has priced the work - got her to sign for it and made a start after taking a deposit.

Over £8000 for the total job!!!

Mum was then talking about getting him to do other things but we said no, especially as this has wiped out all her savings.

After seeing what has been done so far, I can say he has made a reasonable job of things but it isn't perfect and for what is involved I don't think should have come to more than £4000.

Mum is obviously feeling very weepy about the whole thing and is worried because she now has no savings to fall back on should an emergency arise.

Oh how I hate smooth talking con-merchants.

He is due back Wednesday to finish off the back wall of the extension (which he had already removed and tarped - in these winds - but was still waiting for the door). Mum will not be alone when he calls as both my Sister & I will be present.

The invoice he provided does not breakdown the costings and there is no invoice number (the box has been struck through - obviously not intending to put this work through the books!!!).

The worry is, having seen what still needs to be done to make the building secure we can't go in like a bull in a china shop incase he goes and leaves it as is...

The whole thing is making me feel sick and I can understand why Mum is feeling so upset now that she realises she has been taken for a ride...........................................

Back in 2007...

...I had a rant about BAD Manners.

Despite the passage of time, things do not seem to have improved.

I have a number of pet hates as far as BAD manners are concerned...

1. Personal HiFi / iPods played too loud - HEY 'DEAF-EARS' IF I WANTED TO LISTEN TO THAT I'D BE PLAYING IT ON MY OWN SYSTEM...
2. Queue jumping - Of course we don't mind (doh) we are just standing here for something to do...
3. Barging folk out of the way without a 'by your leave or thank you' - Sorry I'm not a mind reader, I didn't realise you wanted to walk exactly where I currently am...
4. Chewing gum with mouth open and making horrid "splonching" noises - GROSS!!!
5. Elderly folk who think their age gives them the right to be served first even when the shop staff are dealing with another customer - We all have to take our turn...
6. Folk who continue to maintain a conversation on their mobiles whilst at the check-out - RUDE OR WHAT!!!!!!
7. Nose picking - ULTRA GROSS!!!
8. Able-bodied folk parking in disabled parking spaces - Lack of consideration, I hope they never have to contend with this problem when they have a real need...
9. Parents not keeping their children under control and condoning bad behaviour - If you can't be bothered with your kids why do you think the rest of us might be...
10. Folk who put their feet on seats on public transport - I just hope you are wearing something really expensive when you sit down on something yuk...

Oooooooooo, I could go on and on, but it's not very good manners to bore ones readers to death (LOL)....................

Things that really...

...wind me up.

There are numerous things that I see on a daily basis that make me wonder how the human race has managed to survive this long.

Some people behave in the most stupid of ways and also have no consideration for others.

Now before anyone says I am a cyclist hater, let me state that I have a bike and over the years have enjoyed going for a ride (especially when we used to go caravanning) and can say that I have found some lovely quite country locations that I probably would never have come across in a car...
...but when I see adults on bikes almost running folk over because they are on the pavement (not a designated cycle path) or riding the wrong way along a cycle lane - it does make me wonder where these folk have left their brains. The road that I use on a Saturday morning is a favourite with road cycling clubs and most are clearly visible to the other road users but there is one guy who wears all black from head to foot and has no lights or reflective areas on him or his bike - a major hazard on dull misty mornings on narrow winding country lanes.

Talking of lack of lights...

Why don't drivers turn their lights on when it is foggy or visibility is low due to dark skies and rain?

Are they really that stupid to think that as long as they can see where they are going it doesn't matter?

Haven't they sussed out that it is to make them visible to others!!!

Then we come to mobile phones...

We seem to live in an age where there are a whole section of society who obviously think the world would come to an end if their phone wasn't glued to their hand or ear 24/7. Believe it or not, humankind managed perfectly well before mobile phones.

During personal safety training delivered by the Police, they advised that phones should not be carried around in your hand as they draw attention to the fact that you have one and they make you an easy target for a snatch. You are also not paying full attention to what is going on around you if you are wandering around chatting on your phone and this makes you an easy target for a mugging.

There is nothing more annoying than someone getting into the Quite Zone of a commuter train (that is quite clearly signed as an area where phones are not to be used) and that inconsiderate idiot maintaining a totally inane conversation that the whole carriage can hear...
...or worse still, the idiot is talking to their bank/credit card company and giving personal details that the world and his wife could note down if so inclined - these are the sort of idiots who would then moan if their accounts were accessed or their identities were stolen.

There is nothing more rude than someone being served in a shop who continues to chat on their phone.

But worse still are the parents that feel their phone conversations are more important than their children. I have seen these idiots walk out into the road pushing a buggy and paying no attention to anything other than their phone or wandering along a busy street paying no attention to their tot who has run off into the crowd.

London stations are extremely busy and crowded during the rush-hour periods and yet you will get an idiot on the stairs just stop all of a sudden so that they can check a call/text - nothing is that urgent that it can't wait until you have reached the end of the staircase and you can move out of the flow of passengers.

Stupidity seems to be on the increase...

Common sense tells you that petrol and flames are not a good mix so what on earth was the guy thinking who noticed a spider in the petrol flap whilst he was filling up and he decided to use his lighter to kill it - one fire & explosion later and the guy had one written-off car and was lucky he didn't set the whole petrol station alight.

Comedians jokingly refer to this sort of behaviour as "Natural selection" but in all honesty...I do wonder how we have managed to survive this long..............................................................

Why do PCs...

...decide to play-up when I'm in a hurry?

As I'm off work this week I've decided to turn my alarm off. I think my alarm is actually a 'comfort blanket' just to ensure that I wake up on time as even with it switched off, I still wake at the same time. However, this morning I woke up as usual and decided to turn over...and promptly went back to sleep.

When I finally woke it was about 1.5 hours later and put me all behind because I wanted to get out and enjoy the sunshine (yes, the day started off lovely).

As is my normal practice each morning I checked my emails - bit slow - and then went to catch up with my blog ready list. That was even slower and I kept losing internet connection or the blog pages would freeze.

I probably don't make things any better because I get frustrated and try to abort actions which doesn't help.

In the end, I gave up and shut the thing down and went on my way.

Let's hope it decides to play nice this evening as I have quite a bit of catching up to do.....................

London Bridge Station...

...deserves its poor reputation.

London Bridge British Rail station is one of the major stations serving (?) the South of London and destinations proceeding South.

Well that is the theory.

Tuesday 2 June I had to go to a meeting in Redhill (Gatwick airport area) by train. I had checked various routes and the most straight forward seemed to be...

Stanford-le-Hope to West Ham...C2C rail.
West Ham to London Bridge...Jubilee Line (London Underground).
London Bridge to Redhill...Southern rail.

I caught my first train at 7.32am and all went well until I arrived at London Bridge.

Due to a fallen tree all services were subject to delay and/or cancellation. Having arrived at about 8.40am (plenty of time to catch my planned 8.52am) I was still waiting for a train to be announced at 9.10am.

Information was sketchy, tannoy announcements were lacking and the few staff that were around really didn't seem too bothered whether there were going to be trains or not. When I questioned a staff member about the two 'Redhill' trains showing on the indicator board as being delayed, his response was..."shouldn't think they will run. You'd be better off trying from Victoria station".

Great...there isn't a direct connection and the underground was now having to cope with folk being turned away from London Bridge in an attempt to complete their journeys.

I arrived at Victoria to the same chaos.

I bumped into a colleague also heading for the same meeting and we proceeded to play musical trains & platforms. Each time we thought we were about to leave they announced that they were missing a member of train crew (probably unable to get to work due to the chaos) or " due to the late running of this service we will not now call at Redhill". When we finally set off, they terminated the train at East Croyden and we again played musical platforms - told to go to the other side of the station only to be sent back again and almost miss the train we needed.

We finally arrived at our meeting at 11.48am (my planned journey should have got to the destination by 9.30am). Not a good start to the day.

Luckily the return journey was better. We timed it just right and caught a train a few moments after arriving at the station (very lucky because if we had missed that one the next two were showing as cancelled).

So Tuesday was not a good day and I was hoping Wednesday was going to be better. I should have known better...

The journey was fine but I got in to find stacks of work waiting to be allocated to what I have left of my team and ended up pitching in to help get some of the more urgent stuff cleared.

I do hope today (Thursday) will be a bit better...if not, at least I can console myself that I have Friday off. Let's see how things go................................................................................

Okay...

...I give up!

I've hunted high.

I've hunted low.

I've turned this house upside down...and I still can't find where I've put my new Deco desk calendar and note book.

I had the bag containing them before Christmas - I took it out of the cupboard upstairs - I placed it on the bannister so that I would remember to take the bag downstairs...and that is the last I saw of it.

I was so sure that I had placed the bag on the chair in the study but it isn't there.

I've searched everywhere I can think to search and it seems that all I'm doing is making a huge mess and getting very frustrated.

I've decided to forget it for the time being and hope the bag turns up when I'm looking for something else. I've obviously put it somewhere for VERY safe keeping......................................................

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

...rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

It's not just me and my lack of 'techiness', it seems that Mr Blogger has been having another hissy-fit. So many folk have been posting about the problems they have been experiencing.

Not had much luck doing anything this week, even had problems opening my reading list from the dashboard.

Fingers crossed that the promise of an extra hour in bed (and possibly an hour of quieter usage) will have Mr Blogger all bright-eyed & bushy-tailed by the end of the weekend........................................

Two weeks of...

...stress & bother.

For 18 years, Mum has had a car through the Motability scheme and I am her designated driver.

For 18 years, things have gone smoothly. No hic-cups with the 3-yearly car changes or the regular servicing appointments (other than they tended to forget to valet the vehicle unless reminded).

This year...hassle.

The "End of Agreement" notification arrived late so everything had to be sorted in a bit of a rush and it didn't help to be told..."you're a bit late coming in so I'm not sure we will be able to meet the change over date" hurumph!

It didn't help further to receive a phone call to advise the car was in - only to discover that the hoist hadn't been installed and that would be another week. Elements of service that had always been part of the 'package' now don't happen (cost cutting?) but it would have been nice to have been informed.

The car was finally collected a week ago...
...for the first time in 18 years it isn't BLUE. The last couple of cars we have had have been very dark (almost black) blue and they have been a nightmare to keep clean - so this time we went with 'Burnished Glow'.

A visit from the engineer to sort out issues with the hoist and adjustments that had been made to Mum's mobility scooter and things went from one extreme to the other - in the end I sorted it myself on Sunday.

Not overly impressed with the new vehicle - standard of workmanship not brilliant, previous standard features now treated as 'extras' so not included. Over all, nothing to get enthusiastic about.

At the end of the day, it has to meet Mum's needs and as long as it does that we will be okay with it but if the support & service continue to diminish - we could be looking for a new supplier in 3 years time....................................................................................

Slight glitch...

...in proceedings.

Broadband is not playing nice at the moment and everything is running sooooooooooo slow (took me 25 mins to open the internet this morning - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr).

I'll catch up with everyone (and hopefully get some posts sorted) when things start playing nice again........................................................

Tuesday, 24 June 2014

Oh Blogger...

...what are you playing at now!!!

I've been having error messages pop-up for a couple of weeks now because Blogger doesn't 'like' IE11 (Blogger doesn't support past IE10 - which is an improvement because a short while ago they only went up to IE9) but I had learnt to live with them...until yesterday...

My Dashboard is really up the creek.

Although I have my list of blogs that I follow showing nicely down the left-hand side, only one post is showing and even though there is the facility of a 'button' below the post snippet to view more - if you click on it nothing happens grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

You can refresh the dashboard but you only get a snippet of the latest post.

Now with the best will in the world, there is no way I can sit glued to the PC hitting refresh all day so that I don't miss anything. So I tried one of the browsers that Blogger does support - was there any difference? Was there heck!!!

I am set up on Bloglovin but I don't find it particularly user friendly (me being very limited in the techy department) and I also noticed that it doesn't show all the posts of the folk that I follow.

If anyone out there has solved this problem with the restricted posts for viewing on blogger dashboard and can give me a hint as what to do, I will be very grateful.

On a happier note (sort of)...

After the fun of the sky photos on Saturday, I had another 'miss' on Sunday.

Having taken Mum shopping, we were home and I was just unpacking the car when Mum shouted "Oh, look at that". Coming towards the bungalow from the Thames was the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight - obviously heading towards Barleylands for day 2 of the Armed Forces show.

They flew over so low, you felt you could almost reach up and touch them. Guess what, I didn't have my camera...groan.

For anyone who doesn't know what the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is, here is a photo that I found on the Internet...
...the 'Flight' consists of a Lancaster Heavy Bomber, a Hurricane fighter and a Spitfire. They look amazing as they pass. According to available information, this is one of only two Lancasters that can fly - the other belongs to the Canadian air force. However, in August this year both will be on display here in the UK as the Canadian plane is flying over and is supposed to arrive on 8 August. What a piece of history.

Right, back to Blogger and see if I can suss out what is going on................................................

Confused...

...I most certainly am!!!

Anyone who visits on a regular basis will know that I'm not very techy - in fact it's a wonder that I ever managed to create a blog; but anyway...

Out of the blue I get an email from Virgin (my service provider) telling me that from 5 June my "blueyonder" email address will no longer allow me to access Google...EEEK!

It also tells me that I need to create a gmail address (if I haven't got an alternative email) in order to continue being able to access my Google accounts...PANIC!

The kind (???) folk at Virgin provided a link to a video to help people carry out the necessary changes - they had to be joking right? The woman in the video was rabbiting at such a rate of knots that you would be hard-pushed to even understand what she was saying let alone follow the instructions. So I resorted to emailing a cry for help to Weasel.

The lovely Suzie (Weaselwise) despairs at my feeble attempts to do anything more than the basics when it comes to anything techy. However, she is very patient and has come to the rescue on a number of occasions...she didn't fail me. Bless her.

Back came a detailed but suitably "Toni-fied" email for me to follow.

Even so, it took me a day to build up the courage to venture into the Google gmail set-up LOL

Between Suzie's instructions and the on-line guidance I got as far as creating a gmail address. So far, so good. However, there seemed to be some significant things that weren't covered on the screen, the most important of which was setting the password!!!

The result being...

Back at the sign-in screen it tells me that it doesn't recognise my password with the new addy but if I type in my old blueyonder addy it loads my gmail account - if you are still following & understand this you are more IT savvy than I am.

I've checked the new gmail address and I've managed to set up the email - and it works - Whoop-whoop. However, this password problem just doesn't make sense to me.

To compound matters, I've spoken to other folk with blueyonder email addresses and they haven't had any contact from Virgin advising them of the need to change anything to continue accessing Google.

So Blogland folk, I now have two email addresses (lucky me) but am no nearer to understanding the "whats, whys or hows". It also doesn't help much to find that the Google guidance also informs me that I can continue to access my Google accounts with my 'old' email address which now shows as my "secondary" or "recovery" address...

Confused?

I know I am................................................................................

Soon be Easter...

...and I can't wait.

Not because of the thought of chocolate Easter Eggs or Hot Cross Buns. No! Just because it heralds a whole week off work...yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

This last two weeks have been exhausting.

Last week saw me having to stay away for two days (luckily only one night) as it was the review of staff performance for the past year. At least I didn't have to travel both days as three of us were given the option to stay-over. I really don't think I could have managed two pre-dawn set offs on the trot.

After a very tiring first day a couple of colleagues who were driving, kindly dropped us off at the Travel Lodge we had been booked into (sorry, didn't even think about getting a photo of the front entrance). Considering how close this TL is to the M11 motorway and Stansted airport, it was surprisingly quiet.

As with all TLs the rooms are very basic...
...a bed...
...a TV, chair and tea/coffee making facilities...
 ...a basic bath/shower...
 ...hand basin & loo.
The view from the window was quite pleasant...
 ...Spring flowers...
...trees and green fields - so very different from the TL in Cambridge.
This was the view to the right...
...which just showed part of the building.
Now this I just couldn't get a good shot of and I didn't have time to go wandering to investigate...
...I haven't a clue what that is behind the fence in the foreground.

All three of us were on the ground floor and being tired we had agreed to an early dinner then an early night as a 'driving colleague' was picking us up at 8.30am the next morning.

Two of us were in adjacent rooms and we both had problems with continuously flushing loos. My colleague was able to get hers to stop by pressing the flush a couple of times but mine didn't want to play ball - so on the way to dinner the problem was reported and I was assured it would be dealt with.

Dinner was pleasant because of the company but nothing to write-home-about as far as the food was concerned. We weren't too bothered because we were tired and we had all had a very long day.

Back at my room everything was lovely and quiet - the loo had been fixed.

The thing I dislike about the bathrooms in these places is that they don't have windows so they have extractor fans - and mine decided it wanted to imitate a 747 taking off (boy was it noisy). So a quick shower and out so that the light/extractor could be switched off.

Watching the news before 'lights out' I noticed a noise getting louder from the bathroom - it sounded rather like the end of a washing machine cycle when the pump is getting rid of the last bit of water...but this didn't stop. I shut the door but the noise was getting louder. I crammed a pillow over my head but the noise was getting louder.

By 11.30pm I couldn't stand it any longer so got dressed and wandered down to reception (these places don't have phones in the rooms) and the night-clerk came to see if she could sort something out.

An hour later I was heading off to another room with bags & baggage roughly packed - just wanting somewhere quiet to go to sleep.

The only available room was the next floor up and the other end of the building...
...looking out the next morning, I could see the room I had started in...

...the very last window on the ground level.
At least I got a different view from the window...
...of the second room LOL

Dealing with the bathroom from hell when all you want to do is sleep is not fun and it made the second day of the meeting seem even longer than it actually was.

Back at work, things haven't been any better - work has been pouring in but due to leave & sick absence my limited resources have been extremely stretched.

My only fully trained & experienced member of staff has been very poorly and this has resulted in my two trainees having to try and take up the slack. I have to say they have made a sterling effort.

I think we are all looking forward to the long Easter weekend and I can't wait for my week off.

I've no plans for anything particular other than sourcing a replacement freezer - yes, mine died at the start of the week but that's a story for another time.

Happy Easter everyone...............................................................................

Why can't folk...

...leave things alone.

I only posted this photo the other day and I was looking forward to seeing how the flowers bulked up and created a better display...
...as things stand, this won't be happening because mindless yobs wrecked the thing - why?

It wasn't harming anyone and it brought a bit of fun and colour to a very boring paved area of the Southend high street. What fun is there in spoiling things for others - if you don't like something, ignore it but don't deprive others from gaining enjoyment.

It just seems like we live in a culture of 'let's see what we can destroy'...'it's not mine so I can wreck it'.

What an awful outlook to have on life.

Unfortunately, it is becoming all too common as I know from the saga of my front fence.

I was so pleased with the result of repairing and painting my fence (Summer before last)...
...but within no time at all, yobs had damaged two panels even further...I ask again; WHY?

I work damned hard for my money in order to be able to keep things in good repair but it is very de-motivating to put in all the hard work only to have it ruined in the blink of an eye. Since the additional damage to the fence the little 'darlings' have also had a go with black spray paint on one of the concrete posts and a panel.

No-one gives me these things, I have to earn the money for them and put in the effort - so why do they think they have the right to spoil things?

Sorry, rant over but I just needed to get it off my chest..................................................................

Bloglovin...

...do you need it or something similar?

I don't know!

The chat/debate about whether our reader function will disappear at the beginning of July continues and I have to say I am still none the wiser.

When this issue first started to do the rounds in Blogland the thought of losing details of the 200+ blogs that I follow was scary - especially as I don't 'do' Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or any other social networking media...I just blog.

Lots of folk had signed up to Bloglovin, so I went and had a look - and yes, it was easy to copy all the blog details across (even for a techy numpty like me) but I did notice that a few didn't transfer. So last week I went into the reader management part of Blogger and printed off the list of blogs I follow - it ran to 13 pages (it could have been less if I'd had an idea about how to reduce the spacing between lines before I printed LOL). This means I have a hard copy as reference...just in case!

So how am I 'lovin' Bloglovin...

Well, as I said, I'm a techy numpty so things need to be simple and yes, I get a lovely email everyday with details of new posts from the folk I follow - but that's just it - it's an email. It is somewhere else that I have to go and look whereas my reader is right there on the dashboard of my blog.

I don't know enough about PCs to be able to link this sort of thing so I can read it in my blog - I don't know if it is even possible.

With my reader I can scan through quickly when I don't have much time and get the gist of what is going on out there (even if I don't have the time to drop by and comment) - I've noticed with Bloglovin that the email doesn't always contain links to all the new posts that have appeared that day...am I supposed to go into Bloglovin itself to look for all the posts that have been published?

There are probably folk out there reading this who are rolling their eyes and thinking 'doh!' - but hey folks, I really don't know.

Blogger has caused me grief on & off but I always manage to get over the problem (often with much nashing of teeth - but I get there) so why can't the techno-nerds leave things alone.

I'm a great believer in "if it ain't broke - don't try and fix it!"......................................................
